HISTORY: In the early weeks of 1999 Joy Bates lost her battle with cancer. It had been a long and hard fought struggle for Joy, who like many affected by the deadly disease, chose to fight the affliction.. During this courageous conflict, Joy's son Paul, a commercial airline pilot and owner of Islamorada's Coconut Cove Resort, made a commitment to himself, and his mom, to dedicate a sizable portion of his time to assist in the effort to find a cure for the dreaded illness. As a result of this pledge, Coconut Cove hosted their first dolphin-fishing contest in the summer of 1998.
